He walked in the room like he owned the place...

written by Rio Denali many, many years ago as an assignment for a creative writing class...

He was neither old, nor young, with looks that could be called non-descript at best. His dreams were faded and worn into his calloused hands, and if you were to shake them (which no one ever did), you would be apt to recoil from their roughness.
The bar had a Casablanca feel to it. Too many men trying to pretend they were something they were not, meanwhile ignoring who they really were. The women wore their summertime clothes even though winter was coming in. Perhaps they wanted to hang onto the beauty of summer and the summertime life? Perhaps these faded beauties were looking for Mr. Right to sweep them off their feet? Our hero, well, he was just about sure he was that guy. He was going to find that lucky lady tonight.
"Give me a scotch on the rocks, barkeep."
"Yessir." The bartender reached behind him to the dark stained wood of the bar and grabbed a dusty bottle. No one ordered scotch around here anymore. Pouring the glass, he took stock of the man with the bad breath.
"Actually, make it a double."
"Yessir."
Our hero surveyed the room, looking for the lucky lady that would get to take him home tonight, and noticed a dark-haired gem sitting alone. He paid for his drink and got up from his stool, sauntering over her way.

"What brings a girl like you to a place like this?"
She blushed. "I'm just waiting for a friend."
"Is this friend your husband?"
Demurely, "No."
Hand on the back of a chair at her table, "Then, mind if I sit down?"
"Be my guest," she motioned to the chair.
"Listen, I don't believe in beating around the bush. My name is Frank and I like you. You're a pretty gal--the kind of gal I could fall in love with. I was wondering if you would take me home tonight, so I can show you what real love is all about."
"Well Frank, I don't believe in beating around the bush either. My name is Ginger and you seem to be a swell guy. I'd have to say that I like you right fine. As far as coming home with me though, that will cost you." Now she met his gaze dead on, almost daring him.
"Cost me?"
"Yeah Frank, I'd say one hundred dollars would do it."
"One hundred dollars? Are you sure you are worth one hundred dollars?"
"Take it or leave it Frank."
"Ok sugar, let's go."
Frank and Ginger gathered up their belongings and headed for the door.
